What Are the Most Common Dental Emergencies?

The most common dental emergency we deal with at Sensible Dentistry is tooth pain. It may start out as a dull ache that soon becomes excruciating. The most common causes of toothaches are tooth pulp infections, which usually require root canal therapy to relieve the pain and restore your healthy smile.

If you have suffered trauma and a tooth has been knocked out, you need prompt care to increase the chances of saving the tooth, so make sure to schedule an emergency appointment right away. Meanwhile, hold the tooth by the crown, rinse it gently to remove any dirt, and return it to its socket. If that is not possible, keep the tooth moist by placing it in a container filled with milk and bring it with you to your emergency dental appointment.

Another common dental emergency is losing a crown or filling. While this may be somewhat uncomfortable because of increased sensitivity in the area, we will get you in the next available appointment to get you taken care of. Additional dental emergencies requiring prompt care include broken, fractured, loose, dislodged, or chipped teeth.

Note: If you’ve been in an accident or there is severe bleeding that you cannot stop, head to the nearest emergency room immediately.

Preventing Dental Emergencies

Did you know that most dental emergencies are preventable? In many cases, severe tooth infection leading to excruciating pain results from a cracked filling or minor tooth damage that would have been detected and repaired during a routine examination before requiring emergency care.

Make sure you also maintain proper oral hygiene practices, brush and floss regularly, limit the consumption of sugary foods and beverages, and drink plenty of water. If you're a night grinder, a night guard will help safeguard your smile and lower the risk of dental damage that could lead to a dental emergency.
